I didn’t know who they were until I saw them on Oprah and then I couldn’t wait to get their CD. I even made sure to put the release date on my calendar. Their music is the kind that gives you goose bumps when you hear it. The power behind it really takes your breath away and I honestly can’t wait to hear what they do next! Buy it today and broaden your musical horizons!! I’ve never posted a review for anything else up to this point, that’s how strongly I feel about them.
Yes, you’ve heard most of these tunes performed by others, but this cd…. WOW. I’d suggest buying the mp3′s so you can immediately transfer them over to your mp3 player for enjoyment during your walk or workout. Escala’s presentation of the classical pieces is breathtaking. Crank it up and enjoy. You won’t be disappointed.
I’ve been waiting a really long time for this album. I found Escala on the net a year ago. My father (a classical music aficionado) raised me with a strong appreciation for classical music. But it’s modern day classical music that really makes my heart sing. This album is WONDERFUL and spellbinding. Kashmir is awesome. Feeling Good is splendid. Clubbed to Death gave me the chills and Adagio For Strings moved me to tears. Perhaps the best part of this album is the song choices. Each song is beautiful, eloquent, and perfect. To compare this group to Bond is to grossly underrepresent them. This is an amazing CD I will cherish, recommend to others, and probably completely wear out.
Been there, done that as they say. Trevor Horn/Escala are Mike Batt/Bond wanna-be’s but it’s a good effort none the less. All the sales hype about new and refreshing, etc., etc., is exactly that – sales hype. Classical-cross over has been around for a while and this is not new. Bond is the biggest selling string quartet of all time and if Escala is your first foray into the genre and you enjoyed it; you’ll love Bond. Explosive is their “greatest hits” – start there. I give it 4 stars because I do enjoy the album, but as I said, nothing new here. As a matter fact, most of these tracks have been done by Bond.
Admittedly, I saw Escala on Oprah a while back where they performed their version of Live and Let Die (which is on the CD). I was completely impressed by both the girls’ abilities/talents and their stage presence.
I downloaded the MP3 version of this CD tonight and, while it’s rather good, my favorite track is the last one (Adagio for Strings) because I was — at one point in the distant past — classically trained in music and own multiple classical albums. Escala did a nice job on this track and it’s rather soothing.
The only drawback to the CD? The “cover tracks.” Come on… I’d completely understand if Escala were a “rock band”, but they are not. The four girls play electrical string instruments. Not sure why they felt the need to “cross over” so much from classical to rock or, honestly, even combine the two. What would have been nice? Classical pieces written for strings with a “modern” (i.e., rock/pop/whatever) slant or twist.
I initially gave them 3 of 5 Amazon stars, but upped that to four because they ARE extremely talented and play well. I can’t fault them completely for their choice of music, as I’m sure the producers of the album has 100% say in what was played. (How disappointing!) (And, okay, Palladio — track 2 — is quite keen as well).
