In the search for maximum function / minimum mass, Tinker leads the list. Wenger and Victorinox each make a dizzying array of combinations, most of which are simply too much steel to lug around. Wenger no longer makes a corollary to the Tinker, though the Classic 11, which used to be the Highlander, and the discontinued but still available Teton, are close and excellent. Here on Amazon we have only Victorinox, and that means Tinker. There’s no good reason for 2 blades unless you let one get dull, and bottle openers are becoming obsolete, but a Phillips screwdriver is essential, and having a second size straight screwdriver makes the nibbler can opener bearable. (For a real can opener, look at a Wenger or GI knife.) Next most useful tool would be pliers, that’s a Deluxe Tinker, but pliers moves this from a tool you carry in your pocket to one you try to keep handy in your pack or bag or glovebox. A Phillips blade obviates a corkscrew, which is no great shakes because if you’re carrying a glass wine bottle you can also carry a corkscrew, or if it comes to that you can push the cork in. The ultimate answer is for bottlers to embrace the better stopper, screwcaps, and leave cork oaks in peace.
If grooming or paper dolls are the extent of your agenda, slimmer knives will work. (That’s why I got the combination. To file my nails and clip coupons I need only the baby knife. To build a raft and get off the island, a Tinker serves better.) For the ideal combination of tools at less bulk, Victorinox makes a Wenger-sized Tinker that I think is close to perfect for everyday carrying. Victorinox Swiss Army Knife
Tinker is available in a rainbow of colors and variety of logos. I’d have loved a purple one or a Mogen David on blue instead of a Swiss cross on red, but this classic combination is a terrific bargain.
I have loved Swiss Army Knifes for years. They never wear out and the only reason you will ever have a need for buying another is you lost yours or you just want a wider collection of them. Over the years I have lost a couple unfortunately but I get so much satisfaction from them they more than pay for the ocassional replacement because of my oversight. Engrave them if you can because very few will ever get turned into Lost & Found. This two knife set is an excellent value because you get a full size knife for your toolbox, vehicle, or work, and a small one to carry everywhere you go. I highly recommend this set. Don’t take these when you travel. Airport security guards love these too and they will confiscate them in the name of security but we all know they end up at their houses.
